Footwear
Good shoes prevent many foot problems. Often the reason feet get sore and have problems is due to poorly fitted footwear. Poor fitting or inappropriate shoes can increase pressure on areas of the feet that are not designed to withstand that pressure. Problems that can occur are abrasions, calluses and corns.
Here are some tips to help you choose the best footwear: -
Have a sales assistant measure both of your feet including the length and width
Do not buy shoes that are too small and hope they will stretch. They won’t!
Only buy shoes at the end of the day when the feet are at their biggest
Try shoes on whilst wearing socks, insoles, orthoses etc. which you intend wearing with them
Never buy shoes that are too small and check that there is a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe
Ensure that there are no seams or creases inside the shoe that could rub against the skin
A good shoe should have: -
A firm heel counter
Deep toe box
Wide forefoot area
Adjustable fastening
Good cushioning
Flat heel
Adequate grip on the sole
Sports shoes
Often sport shoes are made to fit different foot types. You should ask your shoe fitter to supply you with the best shaped shoe for your foot type. The shoe fitter will also be able to supply you with the best shoe for your specific sporting activities.
